I Still Don't Have A Hoverboard

Back to the Future Day was this week, and I must admit… I’m disappointed.

The original Back to the Future is a cinematic classic, and Part II gave us a glimpse of a wild future: flying cars, hoverboards, and tech beyond imagination. That “far future” date? October 21, 2015. Ten years ago. And yet, here we are in 2025 with no flying cars and no hovering skateboards. I’m disappointed because the future we were promised has yet to arrive.

Predicting the future is notoriously difficult. People in the 1950s couldn’t have imagined today’s world, and, as Back to the Future proves, the 1980s missed the mark too. While Hollywood falls short, Scripture tells a different story.

The Bible is filled with prophecies. Some are generalizations and others strikingly specific, but they’ve proven true time and again. There are at least 191 prophecies about the Messiah in the Old Testament, all fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Scholar Norman Geisler notes that the odds of even 16 prophecies being fulfilled in one person are 1 in 10⁴⁵. For 48 prophecies? 1 in 10¹⁵⁷. To put the size of those numbers into perspective, there are only 1082 atoms in the universe.

Why all this future talk? So far, our journey through the Apostles’ Creed has focused on the past. But tomorrow, we turn to the future. We’re taking a deep dive into Christ’s return and judgment. Two future events that may be hard to believe as you read this on your smart phone, but if God has proven trustworthy in the past, His promises about what’s to come deserve our attention.

You don’t want to miss worship tomorrow!
