What's the Point Anyway?

There are some things in life that we just don't know the purpose of. For instance, what's the point of that little pocket inside the bigger front pocket on a pair of jeans?

Then there's the appendix, the biological ticking time bomb. For a lot of people, the appendix only causes problems. Its only apparent purpose is to help us become more like Jesus through suffering. But that's just my best guess.

Or how about the door-close button on an elevator. I'm convinced it does nothing except make us feel like something is getting done.

And one last one: The walk buttons at crosswalks. And this one is scientifically confirmed. A study found that only about 10% of crosswalk buttons actually stop traffic. The rest are called "placebo buttons," which, according to one Harvard researcher, give people "the illusion of control."

We've been working our way through the book of Galatians over the past few weeks, and if you've been paying attention, the Apostle Paul is no fan of "The Law." Paul is all about grace and faith. So, are the Ten Commandments (and the other 603 Jewish laws) as useless as your appendix? Are they as meaningless as a crosswalk button? Can we now just lie, steal, and kill with impunity? What's the point of the law?

That's exactly the question we’ll explore as we close out Galatians 3. Want to know what the Law is good for? It's probably not what you think. Let’s talk about it tomorrow at worship. You might leave seeing the Law in a whole new way.

P.S. There have been a lot of exciting changes to the building this week! So, if you walk in and wonder what happened, we had a team of contractors from South Carolina donate their time to upgrade the facility. And it looks great!
