The X-Files was the quintessential ‘90s sci-fi show. It was full of aliens, monsters, and government conspiracies. And yep, you may have guessed it, I was totally into it.
The show follows two FBI agents, Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. Scully is the skeptic, and Mulder is the believer. She rolls her eyes at reports of Bigfoot sightings, while Mulder brings in research and theories showing that Bigfoot is real. Especially in the early episodes, Scully only believes in the impossible after she comes face to face with it (whether it’s Bigfoot or whatever the monster of the week happens to be).
Mulder famously has a poster in his office showing a UFO with the words, “I want to believe.” In one poignant scene, Scully challenges him: “You’ve always said that you want to believe. But believe in what, Mulder?” Reflecting on the loss of his sister, he replies, “I want to believe that the dead are not lost to us.”
That’s what so many of us long for. We want to believe that death doesn’t have the final word.
Here’s the good news: If Jesus really rose from the dead, then death doesn’t have the final word. That’s what Easter is all about! Every Easter we celebrate the real bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Now, maybe you’re not sure you believe in the resurrection, and that’s okay. It’s a hard thing to wrap your head around. But even if you don’t believe (yet), I think we can all agree: we want to believe. We want to believe that this life isn’t all there is. And if Jesus rose, then death doesn’t win in the end.
I’d love for you to join us this Easter. It’s the most important Sunday of the year, and it’s going to be a powerful morning of worship and hope. Friends and family are always welcome, so feel free to invite someone who might be looking for a church. I hope to see you tomorrow!
