You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you… (Galatians 3:1a)
Have you ever been “bewitched” by someone or something? I don’t mean actual witchcraft, I mean something that captures your attention so completely you can’t look away. Maybe it was a crush, a job, a house, or a car. I know I’ve been there.
Around 2007, I was totally “bewitched” by a TV show called Lost. It followed a group of plane crash survivors stranded on a mysterious island. The show was a giant puzzle box filled with magic, portals, time travel, love triangles, and layer upon layer of drama.
But I wasn’t just watching Lost. I was obsessed with every detail. I read every article I could find and listened to multiple podcasts about it. And I wasn’t alone. A group of us would host watch parties, then spend hours debating theories afterward. When a season ended, we’d count the days until the next one began.
Eventually, it was announced that season six would be the final season. This was great! The writers had an entire season to tie up the mystery and deliver a satisfying conclusion. Anticipation was sky-high. But then... the final episode aired, and it was a total letdown. Some even call it the worst series finale in TV history. Just like that, the spell was broken. I never watched Lost again. Honestly, I hardly thought about it again.
This week in Galatians, Paul is trying to break a spell too. Some false teachers had “bewitched” the Galatian churches with a distorted version of the gospel. Paul wanted them to see that this false gospel wasn’t just a minor mistake, it was a danger to both their everyday lives and eternal future.
But the true gospel? It has the power to break every spell we fall under.
Join us this week as we continue our journey through Galatians!
