The greatest superhero movie ever is The Dark Knight, and it's not even close. One of the most memorable lines from the movie comes from the ace district attorney Harvey Dent. Dent says, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
Harvey Dent was the hope of Gotham City. He was the legal hero that Batman could never be. Harvey was supposed to turn crime-riddled Gotham City around. The craziest part was that he was actually making a difference, and this put him in the crosshairs of the worst people.
At one point in the movie, Harvey and his girlfriend are kidnapped by the Joker. The Joker ties them up, places them in separate locations, and makes Batman choose to only save one of them without knowing who he is saving. Batman ends up saving Harvey Dent and the love of his life is killed. Harvey's life was saved, but he would not escape unharmed. Half of his body would be melted in the fire and his soul would be crushed.
This incident causes him to seek revenge on Batman because he believes Batman it's only fair for Batman to suffer like Harvey suffered. Harvey turns to the deadly methods of the criminals he once tried to convict. Ironically, in the end, Harvey lives long enough to see himself become the villain.
You have probably watched people you once admired become villains. It happens far too often. This week we look at that turning point for King David. God's chosen king will become the villain, and in his wake will be a wave of death and destruction.
This passage will serve as a warning to us about our own sins and also help us overcome our most painful choices, difficult habits, hangups, and mistakes.
