Exodus's Unsung Heroes

Have you ever reread a book of the Bible and seen something you completely missed before?

I just finished the book of Exodus for my personal devotions. Though I have read the book dozens of times, it often felt brand new. And I know Moses didn’t shadow drop Exodus season two or anything…. I just missed important sections. It never fails, God gives me new insights on every reread.

This time, God spoke through the building of the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant. I understand why I previously missed this part. It isn’t packed with teachings or stories but instead contains detailed measurements and designs. Reading it feels a bit like studying blueprints. Let’s just say, it can be challenging.

We know Moses. We know Aaron. We know Mirriam. We know Joshua. However, there are two significant figures, Bezalel and his assistant Oholiab, whom we don’t hear as much about.

Who were they? They were both skilled craftsman. Listen to God describe him in Exodus 31: “Look, I have appointed by name Bezalel… I have filled him with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every craft.”

Then God said this about Oholiab, “I have also selected Oholiab… I have put wisdom in the heart of every skilled artisan in order to make all that I have commanded you.”

Did you notice that? God filled them (And several other craftsmen) with his Spirit so they could use their skills to build the house of worship. They weren’t going on Mt. Sinai to meet God. They weren’t priests like Aaron or warriors like Joshua. They were artists. But their job was no less important. God had specifically chosen, gifted, and filled them with his Spirit so that they could do his will.

This reflection reminded me that every Christian has a unique role and purpose in serving the church. You might not have a public leadership role like Moses or Aaron, but your contribution, like Bezalel and Oholiab's, is just as vital to God's mission.

Tomorrow, I want to show you how important you are to God’s plan. Join us for worship and be part of something meaningful! I can’t wait to see you there!
