Chances are, you use social media. While we can argue about the benefits and harm of social media, for good or for bad, most of us have it. If you are one of those blessed souls that do not use any social media app or website, stay strong!
In 2012 the average person is on the socials for about 90 minutes a day. By 2022 that average time ballooned to 2 hours and 27 minutes a day. I don't say that to shame anyone. It's just the facts, and believe me, I'm right there with you. I just looked at my average daily time on Apple's Screen Time app, and I'm at about 1 hour and 30 minutes of social media per day. Don't hear me wrong, there are some all-time great things on social media, and sometimes mindlessly scrolling can help us unwind after a long day.
But let's face the facts, around two hours of our lives are spent swiping and scrolling. If we're in need of more time in our lives there is an easy solution, cut out social media. Like magic, it's 2 hours back in your life!
I also looked up how long it would take to read the Bible cover to cover. It's a big book, no doubt. What do you think, 400 or 500 hours? Actually, it is only 70 hours. That means if you swapped your social media time with Bible reading you could read the whole Bible 11 times a year!
I'm not saying you must or should swap out all your TikTok swiping for Bible reading. But what if you reduced your time on social media by 30 minutes and spent that time with the Lord? You could dedicate 15 minutes to time in the Scriptures, and 15 minutes to prayer. In one year, you would be closer to the Lord and have read the Bible all the way through.
Last week I spoke about how knowing Christ is the aim of our Christian life, and this week we begin to look at the habits we can develop to get to know our savior better. Tomorrow we're going to look at what a quiet time is, its importance, and how to go about doing one. I think it will be extremely helpful for so many. I can't wait to worship with you tomorrow.
