I grew up blocks from the beach, and we went often. Because of this, I became quite a skilled sand mason.
One of the games we would play while building our sand castles was "War." But it was not war against each other. It was war against the waves. We would attempt to build castles that could withstand attack from the Atlantic Ocean.
We built our castles with large bases so they wouldn't tumble over at the first wave. We would dig deep canals to divert the water as it sieged our castle. We would take the sand from those canals and build tall walls surrounding the main structure. These castles would sometimes stand three to four feet tall. Not to toot my own horn but toot-toot. They were quite impressive.
Then we waited for high tide. It was inevitable. The waves battered our walls, overwhelmed our trenches, and eventually destroyed our magnificent castles. No matter how skilled we were, how much we planned, or how large we built, no sand castle had a chance to win a war against the ocean.
As we continue to study loving God with our minds, we turn to the battle that rages in our minds. Like the waves from the ocean, bad thoughts can ravage and batter us. They can cause us to do things we regret and convince us that wrong is right. At times, it may seem like we have no chance to stand up to their power, but the Scriptures have good news for us.
Though our bad thoughts may be like the ocean and our minds like a sand castle, we have a God who created the Ocean, and controlling it is no problem for him. There is hope.
In 2 Corinthians 10:1-5, we're going to see how loving God with our minds means that we go to war against our bad thoughts. If you are in a struggle against your thoughts (We all are to differing degrees) join us tomorrow as we learn how to fight back!
