Jesus, the God-Man

When we hear about gods born on earth, we might think of myths like Hercules, Achilles, or even Marvel’s Peter Quill. These are half-god, half-human hybrids, typically referred to as demigods. Jesus was born on earth... So does that make Jesus a demigod? Not in a billion-trillion years. The Bible never portrays Jesus as a human-god hybrid. Instead, Jesus is always fully divine and fully human.

This week in the Apostles’ Creed, we’ll see that Jesus was a human in all the ways we are human. He went through the things we go through and even faced death like we face it. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that “…we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.” In other words, because he was truly human, he identifies with the same hardships we face from womb to tomb.

Jesus screamed as a baby when he was hungry and tired, and I’m sure there were times when Mary felt overwhelmed when she couldn’t calm him down. As an adult, He got exhausted, sick, and sad. He had conflict, was misunderstood, hated, and eventually killed. But he also laughed, told stories, enjoyed meals, and liked to have a good time. He lived the highs and lows we all know. Jesus got the whole human experience.

Tomorrow we’re going to explore the life of Jesus, from conception to death. We’ll see that Jesus didn’t stand by and watch us suffer. No, he got his hands dirty and became one of us to rescue us. If Jesus really became one of us, then His story changes ours. God stepped into our world to bring hope. It’s one of the most beautiful beliefs in the Christian faith. So, join us at 10 AM and learn the power of this amazing truth.
