I know I’m really aging myself with this one, but did you watch Scooby Doo at all growing up? To be fair, I watched Scooby Doo in re-runs, and I loved it. There was something about a group of scrappy teens solving a mystery together. Yes, the mysteries were simplistic, but my young mind was always surprised at which criminal was behind the mask.
As I matured my mystery tastes matured too. A good afternoon included re-runs of Columbo, Matlock, Murder She Wrote, or Nancy Drew. Solving the mystery and getting the bad guy was all so fascinating to me.
By the time I was in college I had moved on to the paranormal. You may not believe that the guy who loves Star Trek and Star Wars was also an avid X-Files watcher. Before binging was a thing, I was binging X-files all night on TNT. Was I tired the next day? Of course. But it was worth it. I pride myself on the fact that I have seen every episode of the original run of X-Files (The newer seasons are hot garbage, and I do not count them).
Did you know that the Bible has its own mystery. And it’s not things like who the Nephilim are or when the anti-Christ will appear. While no doubt those are interesting issues, the mystery that the Bible is most concerned with is the gospel.
Paul envisioned the gospel, God’s good news of salvation, as a mystery that can only be discovered in Christ himself. Tomorrow we’re going to learn how the mystery of the gospel helps us grow in our faith. I look forward to worshiping with you!
Ps. By the time you read this, I may or may not be back from Peru. We had a wonderful trip, but I’d be lying if I told you I’m not tired. I’m exhausted… so tomorrow’s sermon might be really entertaining. You never know what I might say. I apologize ahead of time.
