Have you ever tried gardening? How about just keeping a flower alive for more than a few days? I’m not sure if you have a green thumb or not, but I promise that you’re better at it than I am. The first person that comes to mind when I think of gardening is my grandma. It seemed like any flower or plant that she touched flourished.
When my grandma passed away, my grandpa and others in the family tried to keep the flowers and plants healthy in honor of her. However, it really did not take long for almost all of them to die. It turns out that the most important thing for those plants was who the gardener was. Even with all the love and care that my grandpa put in, he just didn’t know as much how to understand the plants and help them grow.
The Bible says a lot about the growing of plants and trees. We see all through the Bible the symbolism of trees (partly why our church is called Arborway). We also see multiple references to the growing of fruit in our lives. Sometimes we can take pictures and metaphors in the Bible too far, but this is one of the cases that it seems the analogy just continues to give us more clarity on how our relationship with God can flourish.
Tomorrow we will look at how the most important part of our growth is who the “Gardener” is. He is the one that does the hard work, but he has some responsibilities for us. Tomorrow, Wale will be sharing with us from God’s Word what some of those responsibilities are. Come worship with us!
