The Machine That Almost Killed Me

Many of you know I used to own a One-Wheel, but if you don’t know what a One-Wheel is, imagine an electric skateboard with one giant rubber wheel in the middle that will carry you at 20 mph. If you think that sounds fun and deadly, you’d be right.

My experience with a One-Wheel was 99% amazing. You feel like you’re floating and flying around. Its controls are so precise and sharp that the machine seems to become one with your brain. You don’t turn, you only think about turning. It’s amazing… 99% of the time.

It’s really that 1% of the time that will get you. I tell people that One-Wheels are not physically possible. They only work because a computer is doing millions of calculations per second to keep you upright. If just one of those calculations goes wrong, you become one with the ground.

I’ll admit, most of my falls were user error. But there were three falls in particular when it seemed the machine rebelled against me. My final fall happened when it launched me because it didn’t like the sidewalk I was riding on (Or something. I’m not sure its exact grievance). I remember flying through the air and then waking up face down on the sidewalk (Thank God, I was wearing a helmet).

I got up, shook, and was surely concussed. I immediately called Allie and told her what happened. I emotionally told her that I had a family that I needed to be alive for, and if I was going to live to 40, I was going to need to get the One-Wheel out of my life.

So I did. I put it on Facebook market and sold it for as much as I bought it for. Now, some poor fool was going to learn the dangers of the One-Wheel.

As deadly as a One-Wheel may be, sin is even more deadly. How I solved my One-Wheel problem is similar to how we should solve sin in our lives. Get rid of it! Tomorrow, we’re looking at Colossians 3, where Paul tells us that if we’re going to live a faithful life to Christ, we have to actively get rid of our sin. In fact, he uses stronger language than that. He says we have to kill our sin.

If you struggle to overcome certain habits and sins in your life, tomorrow is going to be helpful in your fight against sin. I pray you’ll join us for worship.
