This summer saw the release of one of the best superhero movies of the past decade: Superman. If you didn’t see it, I get it. There have been a lot of superhero movies over the past 20 years. That said, I’ve seen most of them, and Superman is one of the good ones.
There is a scene in the middle of the movie where Clark and Lois are patching things up after a fight. Lois, a self-proclaimed punk rocker, pokes fun at Clark for being a nerd. But she sees something different in Clark. She admits that she’s a cynic and is constantly stunned because Clark (i.e., Superman) is different. She questions everything, but he sees beauty in everyone. Superman replies to her with a line that’s stuck with me: “Maybe that’s the real punk rock.”
Some of you know that I used to be a punk rocker (I even had my own punk band that may or may not be searchable on YouTube). But I’m a rebel at heart, and that’s the essence of punk rock. It’s a rejection of the system. Rebellion against “The man.” And in a hateful world like the one we find ourselves living in, what is more counter-cultural, more punk rock than love?
In our newest series, we’re using the ancient Apostles’ Creed to help us understand our faith. I think you’ll find that this short 100-word declaration is real punk rock. Almost 2000 years before The Ramones wrote their first lick, the creed had Christians rebelling against cultures, kings, systems, and tyrants. Not with violence and hate, but with love. This week, we’ll see that when we confess the creed, we confess that Jesus is king and no one else is. That’s countercultural. That’s real punk rock.
I invite you to join us for this powerful message about Christ’s nature, position, and essence (the very heart of our faith). Bring a friend, come with your questions, and let’s encounter something truly transformative together. I’m looking forward to worshiping with you!
