One of the worst things about living in Boston is the traffic. There have been numerous studies and surveys that show Boston is one of the worst cities to drive in. In fact, when we were in the running for the 2020 Olympics, one of the major reasons they didn’t choose Boston was because transportation was going to be a horror show. All that to say, driving in Boston is a nightmare.
My oldest child is learning to drive. We’ve done a lot of short drives, but we’ve never really gotten into the fray of Boston traffic. If she’s going to drive in Boston, she needs to know how to handle traffic. So earlier this week I took her on a trip across the city. We drove from West Roxbury to East Boston.
Now, that may sound like a nightmare, and there’s no doubt that it could have been. But I’m going to tell you, I was kind of looking forward to it. As your kids get older, spending one on one time with them gets harder. A two hour round trip meant I had dedicated time with my kid. Sure, traffic was terrible. And we waited at a draw bridge for 20 minutes. Did we almost get run over by impatient drivers? Absolutely. But I also enjoyed my time with her. Why? Because even a drive across Boston is enjoyable if you love your daughter.
That drive reminded me of something important: Love changes how we handle hard things. This week we’re going to see how if we love people then we don’t need the law to compel us to do what’s right. We want to do what’s right, even when it’s hard. When we love Christ and people, doing what’s right becomes our desire and not just our duty.
Join us tomorrow as we learn how Christ has given us freedom, not to do whatever we want, but so we can love.
