The Most Awesome Thing I've Seen

Summertime always gets me thinking about vacation. In our house, my wife Allie is the vacation planner. She always gets my input, but she’s the one who makes the trip happen.

We’ve taken some unconventional vacations over the years, but one of the most memorable was to upstate New York. If you ever go, there’s one sight you absolutely must see: Niagara Falls. Those falls are one of the most awe-inspiring things I’ve ever experienced.

I had seen the falls before on a few mission trips to Canada, but I’d never done the boat ride that takes you right into the heart of them. This time, Allie got us all tickets, and we went for it.

From the top, the falls look big. But from the bottom, looking up? They’re terrifying. The mist pounds you like a rainstorm. You feel the roar in your chest. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you’re thinking, “What if I don’t make it out of here alive?” Truthfully, a rogue boat captain and the whole ship goes down. It was awesome and terrifying in the truest sense of those words.

And yet... as powerful as Niagara Falls is, it’s still just a drip on a speck circling a pin prick of light, floating through a vast universe.

Every week we get new images from space showing galaxies, stars, and phenomena that make Niagara look like a water fountain. This universe is massive, mysterious, and majestic.

But what if I told you there’s something (or rather, Someone) greater than all of it?

This Sunday, we’re looking at Colossians 1:15–23, one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible. It tells us that Jesus is supreme over creation, over redemption, and over our lives. He doesn’t just exist in the universe. He holds it together. Those falls are under his power. That super nova is in his control. Your life is in his hands.

If that doesn’t bring awe, wonder, and a little healthy fear… I don’t know what will.

PS: We’re also celebrating more baptisms this Sunday! We love baptism Sundays, and we’d love for you to be part of the celebration.
